Usually a family comes in for therapy when a member of the family is in distress, often a child or teen. For example, parents may seek therapy for a child that is throwing temper tantrums or for a teen that will not obey the family rules. Family therapy can be a powerful tool in helping families negotiate these issues.
My goal in family therapy is to create a safe environment in which each family member feels supported and heard. When working with families, I work to facilitate communication between family members and help each member identify and get his or her needs met. In addition, I work with parents to enhance their parenting skills and provide them with additional resources when needed.
